I’ve been on a major zombie kick as of late. I discovered AMC ‘S The Walking Dead on the flight to Santo Domingo last year and was hooked (AMC = the new HBO, fact). Then my vaca read this past week in Captiva was World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. I know June is still a ways away but World War Z would be a perfect summer read. It’s a compilation of oral histories gathered by a fictitious UN reporter documenting the precursors, outbreak, and solution to a worldwide zombie apocalypse. Sounds ridiculous, but it’s a surprisingly realistic take on this genre. It’s broken up into 3-4 page individual accounts, which means it doesn’t get mired down in overly dense detail.
The Walking Dead is awesome. It’s visually interesting, sometimes scary, and occasionally sexy. Basic premise: Atlanta sheriff and random band of survivors navigate what’s left of Georgia after a zombie outbreak wipes out most of Georgia. Plotlines can be slow at times, but the cast is engaging. Muff and Babygirl aren’t on board yet, though they will be soon, because being RIGHT is my RAISON D’ÊTRE.
